i've used a solder "pick" to depress the tabs on the individual pins.. you
could use a dental pick to do the same.. the only problem is, that if you
push the tab in too deep, it's very hard to return it to it's original
position.. either it's going to get pushed all the way in, or you might
break it off when lifting it up..

other than that, get another DB-9 shell and start over..
