It sounds like you have the PIN Pref set for "Every Power On"
At least in NOS2.1:
Extras -> Prefs -> Security
Once you set a PIN, then there should be two buttons ("Change PIN" and
"Remove PIN") as well as a drop down picker that has the following options:
Every Power On
Once an Hour
Once a Day
Never
Try changing this to see what fits your habits best. Unfortunately there is
no "...if inactive for more than..." option in the built-in version.
