And generally, 'fair use' is applied to copies that will be made public. If
my paperback copy of LOTR gets burned in a fire, I'm pretty sure I've got a
right to have a "backup" copy, just like any other information. I *think*
the laws are probably behind the times on this because, even now, to get an
electronic copy of a book, you really have to unbind it -- thus effectively
destroying the original.

But then, I'm not a lawyer...
