I only see any network activity when I open the Chooser and select either
"AppleShare" or "LaserWriter 8", i.e. when I'm explicitly looking for
another computer or printer. Because it's just me who requests that info,
I suppose it gets sent to me only, and not broadcast on the whole network
(doesn't make much of a difference without switches, though). That's a
far cry from the scenario where every 5 seconds, every node on the
network broadcasts its presence, whether anyone listens and cares, or
not. Still, when I'm looking for a file server, I can be sure that the
list displayed in the Chooser is up to date, which is a good thing in my
view. Because AppleTalk's NBP doesn't rely on a dedicated server, this is
very robust to boot.
