A couple few years ago I found a Mead Five-Star zipper closure day
planner. It's a nylon fabric case with 5 (?) rings for the
calendar/index/etc. The rings were attached to a piece of plastic
and just slid out of the binder. I lined the thing with automobile
headliner fabric (a soft 1/8" foam material) for extra padding. The
headliner fabric is available at your friendly neighborhood fabric
store.

The case is a close fit (no room to slide back and forth (and it
can't-- the headliner is 'grabby' enough to keep it put)).

I've already dropped (>eeeeeek<) my newton about 2-3 feet onto a
carpeted concrete floor with no damage (although one of the PCMCIA
cards -did- get popped out of its socket). The case's front and back
covers have sewn (?) edges that project a bit past the rest of the
case and provide a bit more cushioning.

I don't know if mead still makes this, but I think it's a nifty case.
The only drawback is that you have to unzip the thing around 3 sides
of the newton to get at it-- not the best for a quick note, but it's
decent protection.
