bill,

actually, what i was expecting was something "breakthrough", as promised by
apple. a new pda would have been nice. do you agree?

ipod seems like a variation on a theme. yes - it's got lots of storage and
is small, and integrates with 'itunes' really well. as for firewire - will
be great the first time you load up your mp3's, agreed.

but the way it will probably be used: ie regularly synching to your mac and
uploading a small amount of new files on your playlist - could probably be
done quite well with USB, which BTW would allow me to use the ipod with my
tray-loading imac (the original 'consumer' mac + no firewire options
AFAIK): there are a LOT of them out there.

the ipod seems like a hack: "we have to make 'something' for the digital
hub, so let's do an mp3 player, and how can we make it fancy? add
firewire." ipod could be made by any company - apple can do better.

as for their business model: itunes and ipod should be made for windows -
imagine how many pc users it would bring into apple stores! apple has
suffered in the past from not being open enough.

apple is at its best when it pushes the envelope. it should be making a
pda, but then steve jobs would have to answer questions like "was it a
mistake to drop newton?" and i can't imagine he wants to do that.

i agree 100% about the biggest problem with the newton - size. i really
hate the fact that my mp2k can't travel with me 24/7 because of it's size.
i would like a great pda - with a smart UI, integrated mp3 + airport for
starters. yes, i have thought about visor + especally handera 330. but i
don't want a palm right now. maybe a palmOS 5 device?

i see ipod as another thing to carry - add that to:

wallet,
keys,
newton
+ mobile phone.

great! perhaps apple's next "breakthrough" product will be 'iPants' -
special apple cargoes to carry all your hub devices :-)

whatever happened to product convergence? that would represent
'breakthrough' in my mind.

'til then,

aaron tester
