[NTLK] Should I take an oak stake to this MP130?

Looks like the electronics is ok then. You might check for a loose wire.
The backlight wires are what I have named connections f and e in
http://www.pda-soft.de/130_disassemble.html (third picture from top).

The way you describe it, it's unlikely it's a wire.

If you take up shipping from Germany (about $4, slow snail mail delivery),
I can probably prepare a small circuit board you can connect a 9 volt block
battery and the two wires (soldered off the mainboard before of course) to.
The board can create the voltage needed for the backlight, that way you can
be sure if it's dead or not. I wouldn't charge you for the board if you
promise
that you will send it on to any list member with the same problem,
charging, like me, only for shipping.

Just in case you want to get rid of the 130, I might be interested in buying
it.

As to oak stakes, to the best of my knowledge this only helps getting rid
of vampires, and even that has not yet been scientifically proven as far
as I know.
