Hi all,

I'm pleased to announce ATA Support 1.0b4. However, I hoped I would
have fixed the bugs which are left, but no I hadn't enough time, so
they'll be fixed in next release, and this will surely not be the
latest 1.0 beta :(

This beta expires on Monday, September, 17th, 2001.

Hey, I still can't use more than 4 MB, why?
-------------------------------------------

Well, this is a beta. The software isn't finished. Please wait for
the final release and in the meanwhile, use it at your own risk (see
the list of known bugs).

Where can I find this package?
------------------------------

As usual, you can download this new release on my website:
http://www.kallisys.com/newton/ata/

How can I help the developer?
-----------------------------

If you experience any bug which isn't listed in the list of known
bugs (the list is updated on my website as I get reports), please
report it. The best is to provide as much as information as you can.
To do so, try the Log version of the package. This version is slower
than the regular version but saves log data about exceptions and
errors which can occur here and there and be symptoms of bugs. This
log can be retrieved by tapping the package in the Extras Drawer.
Also please provide a BugTrap log if BugTrap generates anything (the
BugTrap's log will be more useful with the Log version as well).

If you have a card which doesn't work, please report it with a log
generated by the log package. Without the log, I won't be able to
find out why your card doesn't work. Please don't report any problem
with Iomega Clik! drives or don't ask me if they work, they don't.
You can also report cards which do work, but there are so many of
them that I'm no longer sure that I'll maintain a full list of them.

What's new?
-----------

* The compilation of the native code is now controlled by a makefile instead of
the Newton C++ Toolbox menus. The difference for the end-user is that the code
in NTK native modules will be smaller and the developer will last longer as he
drinks less coffee because a full compilation takes less time.
* Fixed a bug in the interface: the card slip can now be moved.
* Little optimization when commiting transactions.
* In order to prevent data loss/corruption, the Newton is restarted when an ATA
card which was still in used is brutally removed.
* The software now comes in an installer package.
* The stores can now be erased (in fact, the system erase function only works
with linear cards - it plays with XIP which isn't possible with ATA cards, so
erasing a store is strictly equivalent to unmounting it, initializing it,
remounting it and confirm erase twice).
* There is an alert (which can be disabled) when a store that was just mounted
wasn't in a clean transaction state.
* When a store gets full, the system sometimes call a function which wasn't
implemented. This function has been implemented and apparently stores getting
full are no longer a problem.
* The menu item for the backup feature was removed (the backup feature will not
  be implemented for 1.0 release).
* When partitionning, there is now no alert to confirm the
initialization of the
stores which have the auto-mount flag set.
* There is now a confirmation for Initialization and Erase.

Bugs? What do you mean?
-----------------------

* When there are some packages (such as NetHopper) on an ATA store, bad things
happen when the Newton goes to sleep and this causes the
  system to restart.
* Stress-testing showed that bad things happen after a transaction hasn't been
  cleaned properly.
* There seem to be some incompatibility with the driver of the ethernet card
  3C589.
* Aesthetic bug: the names of partitions seems to be eaten (y becomes v).
