I used 91% Isopropyl Alcohol to remove the goo and clean the screen and
case. Worked slowly but very well on the 2100 with no damage.
You might try removing the battery and cleaning the contacts with the
alcohol too. Mine had lots of crud on the contacts. It wouldn't hole a
charge after the first 15 min. of charging but now gives me at least 10
hours with the backlight on.
