I see that there was a bit of discussion on the origins of Rosetta and
Calligrapher in a thread dated in Sept 2000:

After reading the discussion, it referred to a paper on the use of Neural
Networks in the HWR system. I've discovered a URL where a PDF file of the
paper can be downloaded. Furthermore, the page has additional material that
might be of interest to Newtonians who might be interested in the more
esoteric and technical aspects of Newton-related HWR.
