Ummmm, what this has to do with Newtons is beyond me, but regarding
turbo Porches and Fornula 1 engines, let's not be deluded. What exactly
do you think a turbo is? For those who might be unaware, this is
artificial aspiration of an engine. Boost is an artificial way to, in
effect, increase the displacement of an engine. Therefore, if you have a
3.0 liter engine and throw in 14 psi boost, you're essentially doubling
the amount of air the engine is processing. That Porche runs like it has
a 6 liter engine, because under boost, it pretty much IS a 6 liter if it
has 14 psi boost. 7 psi would equal about 4.5 liters in displacement.
Normally aspirated engines (non-turbo/ non-supercharged) peak at around
85% volumetric efficiency. Therefore, even if you could manage 90% VE, a
normally aspirated 3 liter displaces only 2.7 liters. Technology aside,
it still takes roughly 14 parts of air to every part of gasoline.
Engines run on air, as you can see by the ratios. The more air you can
cram in, the more power it makes. Gasoline is the catalyst. It's the
same here as it is on the European side of the pond. But, just for the
record, while neither is streetable in any sense of the word, I'll take
(instead of a Formula 1 engine) a 500 cubic inch, supercharged,
nitromethane-fueled, 6000 horsepower American V-8.....capable of over
300 MPH in less than 5 seconds. A design, I might add, that is based on
the 60's era Chrysler Hemi engine.....the same engine that still holds
race records with Nascar, running 200+ MPH for 500 miles. You can take
off all the fancy racing gear, bolt on the conventional pieces, and
it'll still bolt up to a Torqueflite transmission. While now cast in
aluminum, the bolt patterns are the same. Ummm, where's my Newt so I can
figure that in KPH? Oh, and applying throttle while braking was how Audi
discovered the winning edge for the Quattro. This helps get the turbo
boost up so the engine is ready to fly as you release the brake while
coming out of a corner. Also, just because you have a lot of "tach" left
when in top gear doesn't mean you can pull redline in top gear. 160 MPH
on 125 HP? On 4 wheels? Haven't seen that one yet.....not on any sort of
production vehicle.
