If you want to go the RealBasic route, talk to Thomas Tempelmann. He
used RealBasic to write the DIL Tester (Newton Data Browser). He's
willing to give out the code (or at least he was the last time I talked
to him) to people interested in continuing the work. www.tempel.org

Subject: Re: [NTLK] Be-all End-all sync app...

The whole sync issue seems rather complicated. Here, Apple comes along=20
and introduces this "Most Advanced OS" which also brings along it's own=20
Address Book - no calendar app though. Instead of everybody using it,=20
everybody writes his own. There is the Palm Desktop - to which we can=20
now sync (well, sort of), then there is Entourage with is own stuff,=20
which in turn is shared with the M$ Applications (Word, Excel), then=20
there is Now - who is trying to convince me that I should buy from them=20
what I get for free from Palm, then there is myself who has written his=20
own web based address book ...
And of course, none of them really talk to each other - but of course,=20
we, the Newton people want to sync with each and every one of them - oh=20
and yes, then there is the Windows world which I haven't even considered

so far with it's myriad of PIM type applications.
I think, before anybody seriously considers writing any type of=20
application to sync the Newton to anything, we need a common base to=20
work with. I would consider writing some sync application which would=20
let me sync a Newton to my PostgreSQL based address book. I might also=20
consider to write a simple calendar app, also based on PostgreSQL, maybe

using RealBasic, but the RealBasic <-> Database interface is nowhere=20
explained properly in any of the RealBasic documents I went through. A=20
RealBasic <-> Newton interface - well, does that exist somewhere?

Oh and about this "Most Advanced OS" stuff, Steve Jobs is going on=20
about? Well, BSD 4.4 is nothing new and neither is a Mach MicroKernel.=20
The Aqua Desktop, well, it's the old MacOS with a pretty face. And in=20
the old MacOS (7 - 9), I was able to print to my two networked DeskJet=20
printers (via a JetDirect print server) from all of my machines. Under=20
MacOS X, this is no longer possible and I have to hook the printers up=20
via USB - one per machine - Now I have 3 machines here at home which can

no longer print because I refuse to buy them some more printers. Asking=20
Apple about the issue, you get "This is an issue with the driver - which

is the responsibility of HP". Kinda like: "We built this car which uses=20
this new type of gas which is our proprietary gas, sorry, but they don't

have that at the gas stations? - well, too bad, go and complain to the=20
oil companies.".

Oh well, anyway - if anybody can give me some pointers as to talking=20
from a Newton to RealBasic and/or RealBasic and SQL databases, I might=20
get tempted and write some 'Data Exchange App'.

Best regards,
Chris
