has anyone tried to compile the unix NPI under Windows/cygwin? Is there a
better NPI for windows which doesn't have to slowdown the computer?

I would imagine that programs for windows/cygwin and Os X can share a lot of
the unix core. Obviously the front-end GUI code would have to change, but
when toolkits like Fox or WxWindows gui abstraction libraries are ported to
Os X, even that can remain common between components.
