Hmmm, not sure if that would work, but you could try to run the DIL Tester
from Thomas Tempelmann <http://www.tempel.org/> in Classic and try to setup
a connection from there. AFAIK, there isn't anything else to do. You launch
the Dock on your Newton and pick IrDA in the "Connect via" popup. The only
thing I don't know is whether IrDA transfers would work from Classic app.

BTW, you need to use the DIL Tester because NCU won't work. So, that means
you'll be basically only loading packages, no backup.

Oh, and don't forget to go in the Network Preferences in OS X. Make sure th=
e
IrDA Modem port is active. I don't know what kind of settings you would put
there, though, and I've never used it. It seems that the port is expecting
somehow to connect to a modem or something like that since it offers
different connections like PPP, manual or AOL. So, I really can't offer any
other help, sorry...
