Yup, but it's not recommended to solder on the terminals of batteries that
don't have the tabs. It's said that heating the battery to those temps could
destroy or dramatically alter the expected life of the battery. I'm sure the
same happens with tabbed batteries, but, at least with the tabs you have a
litte extra room to use a heat sink.
Don't think I want to try rebuilding another one. Now that it seems there is
a large source of cages available.

Yes, the OMP cage works fine with the MP100.

I've been working on that project on and off as well. So far, no real
success. Soldering AAA cells is fiddly and NiCDs really don't like it. I'm
still looking for AAA NiCDs with soldering tabs.

Very likely. I have a box of OMP/MP100 packs and not one sample I've
tried has held a charge for more than a minute. I'd say that, as a species,
the OMP rechargable pack is just about extinct.
