In many cases they're worried about keeping the people around; it
becomes a liability. The employee won't get much work done because they
don't see the point, and they're definitely not going to do any good
for the morale of those who still have jobs. Not to mention that some
may steal intellectual or physical property.
Many companies offer severance packages that cover the employee's
salary for the next couple of weeks anyway. The last time I was laid
off I received several weeks' severance and found a new job in three
days without ever searching a job database or want ad... god I wish we
still had 1999's job market :-\
Jeremy, you might want to post your resume and portfolio on
craigslist.org, and search the jobs there as well.
