Okay, I've got a tricky mystery for you.
I bought this eMate off of eBay for parts, which of course, didn't
work at all when I got it.
Sent it off for repairs, and the tech put in another motherboard, but
reported when powered up, it would briefly display the Newton logo,
then nothing.
I told him to leave the 'new' motherboard in, because the original was
stone dead, and at least this one had some activity.
So I get the thing home and test it: sure enough, the screen is black,
and there is no sound.
Easy enough to fix: adjust the contrast and volume switches, right?
Turns out the exterior switch housings were not matched properly with
the actual switches on the motherboard. Fixed that, and the unit
boots up fine now (though it needs another battery).
Talked to the tech about this, and he reported that he moved those
switches on the motherboard (while the unit was pretty much
disassembled and powered up) to no avail.
My question: is there some sort of electrical connection between the
sliders on the case and the sliders on the motherboard? Can't figure
out why it didn't work at the shop but works now -- unless maybe the
Big Reset helped ....
Anyone ....?
