In Notes (for example), follow this sequence:

[A]->[Options]->[Letter Shapes]

The newt will then show you what strokes the Newt is most looking for,
though often other patterns will still work. Play around with that and
[Fine Tuning] from the options box, and you'll see the recognition get
much better.
