Funny you all should bring this up again. I just got January's Mac Addict,
and in their review, they conclude with these comments:
"Apple enters the competitive world of consumer electronics with a powerful
contender. Unlike the Newton, the iPod is not a new concept. It's simply a
more advanced iteration of a gadget the public already craves. Instead of
being ahead of its time, these days Apple's ahead of the curve. And that's
the perfect place to be."
I think that sums it up well, and probably is very close to the reason why
Apple decided to jump aboard the mp3 player market.
