hi frank,

when i used my newt in india, the contrast was always too black somwhere
around mid-day even with the auto contrast extension. it was just too hot if
i was not in the shadow.

my suggestion here is that you put the newton under a lamp and wait some 10
mins before you turn it on. the crystals shall now be visible, alter the
contrast slider, go grab a coffe and wait until the newton chills a bit.
