My initial reaction would be an interpreted language that could be executed
locally. I like JavaScript in that regard, because all you need is a text
editor and a browser. And the concepts (functions, parameters, etc.) are all
extremely transferable to other more advanced languages (Java, C++, etc.),
plus there's such a body of helper materials available on the Web.
