Look folks,

The issue of whether OS X works or not is missing the point. A Boeing 707
=B3works=B2, as does a vinyl record and Commodore PET. OS X is old, ancient, a
relic. It belongs in a museum. It=B9s born of legacy thinking based on legacy
technology and the interface is demonstrably incompetent. Unlike previous
developments that have emanated from Apple, OS X advances the art of
computing (from the point of view of the user) in no significant way - othe=
r
than perhaps being a bit more stable. It tackles none of the big issues tha=
t
are facing computing, has no inventive features, is grotesque in its
demands of memory and computing performance and is making serious errors in
dealing with the file system.

Most of the reasons for this are that Apple is no longer the same company
that brought us the GUI, Newton, FireWire, Laser printers and all the other
goodies that pushed things forward for the user. Industrial design apart,
they are now a conservative company producing conservative products, hoping
that glitz will disguise the clapped out stuff under the bonnet.

As has been mentioned, Apple had to do something with their OS but what the=
y
have done is to opt out of being technology leaders. Apple were never going
to displace Microsoft, there was no need to produce a direct competitor so
they could have produced an OS that was truly a step forward - but they ble=
w
it.

We now have to make the best of it or look elsewhere. But let=B9s not kid
ourselves - if there ever is another PDA from Apple, be prepared for it not
to be what we would like it to be.

Joel.

Ah, that feels better! :-) Time for my next injection...
