Well, with Calls, you have a quick and dirty way to log calls you make from
the Newton. When I do it, I write "call carl" in Assist, and the call slip
comes up. I usually dial via the speaker, and check the little box "Log
call." When you chose that option, it automatically opens the calls app,
enters the name and phone number of the person you are calling, and then
dials the number. If you hold most phones up to the speaker, it will dial
the number for you (I have discovered two or three phones with which this
has never worked--volume issues I have supposed.) When it's done dialing, a
timer has started running. As you talk, you can write notes in the bottom
portion. When you finish the call, you tap the "hang up" button and choose
one of the default popup options. After it hangs up, the name is
automatically hilited, and if you tap "find" it will enter the person's name
into the find box. You can now search the calls app for a record of other
conversations you have had with this person, or search the whole newton for
all activities and items about this person, or find his name in the card
file (names app). It is fairly convenient. Oh, and you can make other calls
from the same call slip merely by tapping on the "place call" button. Each
call will be recorded below the previous, thus creating a rather complete
log of phone calls with a contact in one slip. I like to do this if the
calls are all about the same subject. Like in Notes, you can rename titles
of phone slips, where you can give some specific details on the subject of
the call.
Alternately, you could open up the Calls app, and initiate calls from there.
Do this, open Calls, and tap on "New." Now, write in the first or last name
(or both, but this is less fun) of somebody in your address book. Now, tap
the diamond. You should see his name in the list. Tap it, and his name is
now completely entered as well as his phone number. If he has more than one
number, you can immediately choose that from the diamond. Once you've done
all that, tap on the "Place call" button and call. Once the call has begun,
you merely do what I've already described.
Now, there is one other method to get a name into the Calls app. Now that
you've entered a couple of names, create a new call slip, and tap
immediately on the diamond next to "Name." You should see at least these two
names, and if somebody else has used the Calls app in the past, other names.
You can choose a name from this popup list without writing anything (for
those contacts you call frequently).
I think I've about exhausted the built-in capabilities. There have been a
couple of products made by others to extend the built-in stationery. Iambic
has one that I like. It allows you to create a todo, and add an alarm to a
phone call, as well as other little tidbits. The only problem with these is
that you must open the Calls app to utilize them. Only the Built-in slip
gets used if you initiate a call from the Newton's call slip.
