Good morning BK!
Damnedest thing. After seeing the Time picture, I said screw it and went
to bed. Then for some reason, I awoke automatically at 0155. So I
decided to watch MWSF live via QT. Glad that I did. Enjoyed the intro.
Reference the iMac. From the time picture, I was very disappointed. It
sort of reminded me of TAM prototypes that I saw so it didn't strike me
as new.
Then after watching MWSF, I came away with a better feeling after seeing
how the screen swivels.
However, I believe that Apple violated it's all in one minimalizing
concept. I do not see built in stereo speakers in the screen or base.
If the addition of Apple Pro speakers is required, then that sucks. One
of the great selling points of the iMac, is all in one. Jobs even harped
on this during the intro. This makes no sense to me. How are would it
have been to add built in speakers to the display or base? Maybe I
missed something...
Bottom line for me, is that I will need to see one in person before
deciding...
Anyhow, I decided to do some simple comparisons between the iBook and
iMac. I did both the top end and low end models. Here they are:
Comparing iBook to iMac top end models (both cost $1,799):
iBook iMac
Cost 1,799 1,799
Screen 14 15
CPU G3/600 G4/800
HD 20 60
RAM 256 256
Video 8MB GF2 32MB
Drive Combo SuperDrive
Comparing iBook to iMac low end models (iBook $1,199 and iMac $1,299):
iBook iMac
Cost 1,199 1,299
Screen 12 15
CPU G3/600 G4/700
HD 15 40
RAM 128 128
Video 8MB GF2 32MB
Drive CD Rom Combo
Overall, you get more bang for your $ with a desktop, which is expected.
In this case a decent amount. Yet at the same time, the iBook offering
is still good.
SJ mentioned that the top end iMac would have cost you $4,500 last year
(Tower with a 15 inch Cinema Display). The new top end iMac will also be
the first to be released in January. Followed by the midrange in
February, then the low end in March. SJ mentioned that this is due to
their perceived demand for the top end iMac.
The top end iMac does give a pretty good bang for the $.
Looks like our Green Machines are still the best out there! :-)
Well time to get an hours rest before going to work...
