I recall someone raised a question before in this very line.
Just received this from MacFixIt:

"Flash memory may be at risk when mailed

According to the CompactFlash Association and reported in this MSNBC
article, flash memory cards can be permanently damaged by an irradiation
technique used by the US Postal Service to sanatize mail against anthrax
and other biological hazards. The report points out that the particular
machines that can cause the problem may no longer be in use, at least at
present, and that the CompactFlash Association is working with the
Postal Service on a long-term solution. The article states:
'Compact Flash memory cards used to store data on many name-brand
digital cameras and handheld computers face not just data loss but
become entirely inoperable when subjected to electron beam irradiation.'".
