this is different: trinary (3 state) versus base three counting.
you can count in any base on a digital computer (binary, octal, hex) and
its still a binary system.
i like ed's idea - on, off, and maybe. computers made to take advantage of
hysteresis, so you get a different value switching 0-1 than 1-0. the need
for predictive computer pushed to the limit...
