the idea of the 'gnuton' is tres cool. indeed, a GNOS could alter the
ultimate fate of the Newton. but it seems to me that no matter how good it
will get, it will always lack a feature- and i don't mean hwr. The gnuton
will not have Newton, that little guy inside [the "Little Green Friend"]. It
would be difficult to live without Newton's intelligence. we'd have to go
back to using our own brains.
on the other hand maybe i am incorrect about how smart the newt is. maybe
the system architecture is just really clever [soups and what not] that
makes it easy to navigate, search within, and interact with.
anyway, on a different tangent look at this
http://www.cupertino.de/pages/archiv/proto/newton_2.html
..and tell me it wouldn't be useful. the smaller version of course wasn't
viable in 95, but today we can probably produce something like that
[relatively] cheaply, and communications networks are heading towards video
capability. throw in some voice rec and away you go. Apple could take the
NewtOS out of the freezer, get a deal on Motorola Startacs, smash em
together with Dragon and a Sony videocamera and voila! they sell that right
now. couldn't they?
