I think what Les has written is a little ambiguous. He says "I watched my
available memory decrease from about 410K to 350K and then did a reset." A
plain reading of this sentence is that he did a reset not the Newton. But I
can see how you could read it the other way.
He then says "When Newton reset and came back to life this same thing
happened all over again." After which he explains what he means by the
"same thing" happening "all over gain." Specifically, "Every few seconds, a
little more memory was lost." - no mention of the reset so it seems
reasonable to assume that it didn't reset itself.
So, I still think it's normal behaviour. If, however, I've misread Les'
statements and the Newt is, in fact, resetting itself, then I agree it is
most definitely not normal.
Regards,
Patrick.

I don't think it IS normal - he mentioned the Newt resets itself, as in
reboots.

Hi Gerard,
This has come up a number of times before and it's perfectly normal
behavior, particularly with Avi's loaded. There is a brief mention of
it in
the FAQ:
http://www.chuma.org/newton/faq/newton-faq-nos.html#IIIC5
Basically, every time Avi's (or any other application for that matter)
looks
to see how much heap is left so that it can update the display of
remaining
heap it actually uses up a little bit of heap. It's sort of like a
destructive test. I want to see how much heap is left but I must use
some
of the remaining heap in order to have a look. You might want to have a
bit
of a read about the Newton OS memory management, heap and garbage
collection
in the FAQ. The long and the short of it though, is that there is
nothing
to worry about.
Regards,
Patrick.

Subject: [NTLK] Decreasing Heap issue
Last night I installed the NewtCase Extension Manager version 2.0 on my
upgraded 2000. After fiddling with the software for awhile, I decided to
remove it and the Extras drawer icons it had created. So far, no
problem.
After Extension Manager was removed, I noticed that my available heap
storage was decreasing by about 1024 bytes every few seconds. I watched
my
available memory decrease from about 410K to 350K and then did a reset.
When Newton reset and came back to life this same thing happened all
over
again. Every few seconds, a little more memory was lost.
I should point out that I am using Avi's Back Drop v 1.24 and that when
I
tap on the heap number it does go back up to near what it should be but,
then starts the downward cycle all over again.
My Newton NEVER DID THIS BEFORE! What does this mean? Is it a problem?
How
can I fix it?
Thanks.
