I looked at the diagnostic app and think that it won't provide enough information for you. Here is SimpleMail part of the user info of my Newt (mark [v] means that item is checked, mark [0] that it's unchecked.
[v] Enabled
e-mail: balaban_at_mac.com
username: balaban
imap host: mail.mac.com
[v] Authentificate
smtp host: pop.mtu.ru (this is my provider's server)
[0] Authentificate
If you are going to use POP with mac.com it should look like this:
[v] Enabled
e-mail: balaban_at_mac.com
username: balaban
POP host: mail.mac.com <-----
[0] Authentificate <------
smtp host: pop.mtu.ru (this is my provider's server)
[0] Authentificate
The difference between two setups is marked with <------. Of course you should provide password in both cases.
I don't see anything that can prevent connection with mac.com in SimpleMail's prefs (found in in/out box), so I think that you can set them as you like. I can browse email on server or download it without previewing, use filter, leave mail on server or delete after downloading etc.
Good luck!
