I finally got my network cards, a 3Com 3C589C for my Newton and a
generic PCI 10BASE-T for my desktop.
The 3Com card installed beautifully, following the faq (as a 3C589
card). I set it up with address 192.168.0.3 (netmask 255.255.255.0). In
Prefs, AppleTalk was configured to use EtherTalk, with the correct card
selected.
The desktop card was installed under Linux (SuSE 7.2) with address
192.168.0.2, using YaST2, and it pings fine, look:
PING 192.168.0.2 (192.168.0.2): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 192.168.0.2: icmp_seq=0 ttl=255 time=0.111 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.2: icmp_seq=1 ttl=255 time=0.093 ms
--- 192.168.0.2 ping statistics ---
2 packets transmitted, 2 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 0.093/0.102/0.111 ms
I downloaded the netatalk rpms from the SuSE site and installed them.
I added a line in /etc/atalk/papd.conf (SuSE puts some configuration
files in different locations from RedHat):
lplj4p::pr=/dev/lp0:op=kj:pd=/user/etc/hp4m6_v1.ppd:
I made sure that the atalk daemon is running:
kj_at_linux:~ > ps waux | grep atalk
root 1188 0.0 0.1 2432 888 ? S 16:21 0:00
/usr/sbin/atalkd
kj 1299 0.0 0.1 1548 584 pts/1 S 16:48 0:00 grep
atalk
And then I opened Notepad, selected print and chose "Choose Network
LaserWriter".
What I _do_ get is a lot of LED-activity on both cards, but the slip
says nothing but 'Looking for Printers", until I kill it. The connection
is made with a RJ45 crossover cable.
So what am I doing wrong? Pls bear in mind that this network stuff is
rather new for me.
