[NTLK] Mad Max choppy playback

I've got two files on an external card, one at 48kbps, 22khz (mono); and
the other at 161kbps, 44khz (stereo). The second file is choppy as
heck, stuttering about twice a second, while the first plays fine. Both
times I have nothing else running except the extras drawer.
