Here's a summary of problems I had so far with the cigarette box modem:
1. to the radio transmission: This sounds like an open phone line connection
and I would suspect that the two phone wires aren't connected properly with
the modem. I hope that you used the phone wall plug which is dedicated to
analog phones and not the DSL branch of it ;-)
2. It might be that the AA battery inside is weak and the relais doesn't
completly switch, but still make clicking noise. Note that the modem drains
the battery if it is not used within about a month or two.
3. Try to get the wiring right at first. You have to measure about 24...48V
DC across the two middle pins of the RJ12 connector which goes into the
modem. You should be able to hear the same dial tone from the Modem or
Newton speaker as you have with your telephone.
