err, I've never had a problem traveling with a modem, nor have my US friends
coming over here although I won't testify ;-).
My works laptop was a US model (US keyboard) shipped to me from the US and
I've used the modem part of it out of the box with no need for anything except
a modem adaptor.
You'll need a BT (British Telecom) to US phone socket adaptor. These are quite
easily found in Maplins and other good electrical places or indeed airports
(although you'll pay a premium).
