You're quite right- my mistake, I'd forgotten that. What I've tried is
ejecting a memory card with the button (get the panicked "put that back!"
message if something's open, actually I get it even if I just push the
button once and don't eject), and pulling it out by hand, at which point I
get exactly the same behavior (clean if nothing open, "put that back"
otherwise). With communication cards it doesn't seem to matter at all.
