i think that this is palm-based FUD.. sure Mr. Chu worked on the Newton.. but, in what capacity?? did he sweep up?? or did he code, or what?? and what revision of the OS??
apple's not big enough to compete?? apple has about 4 billion in cash reserves, and has successfully launched the iPod in a sea of MP3 players.. so, if apple can do that, i'm sure that if apple wanted, they could launch a PDA and compete and succeed at it..
and the crap that it was too big is exactly that.. crap..
the major problem with why the Newton was discontinued, was the price.. dead fact.. 1100.00usd for a 2100 and keyboard was really high..
to compare the Palm to the Newton is just lame.. just what exactly did the palms do when they first came out?? not much.. and, wasn't it until the palmIII came out that they had some sort of modem to allow some connectivity?? now, sure they have the palmVII/tungsten"w" using the overpriced Palm.net network.. but what can you really do with it?? lame ass web.. truncated email.. anything else?? oh, yea.. AvantGo.. which is fine, if you are using an HTML 3.2 browser, and you have access of the AvantGo URLs..
the article is some ex-apple employee who runs a palm-related company, talking trash about the Newton and apple.. to benefit his cause..
because if apple *did* decide to release a modern PDA, Newton-based or not, it would probably crush out most of the other PDAs that are now around..
"imagine the disincentive to software development if after months of work another company could come along and copy your work and market it under it's own name...without legal restraints to such copying, companies like Apple could not afford to advance the state of the art"
