Ed is absolutely right. To beat you to your questions,
the last time I smoked was in 1973, and I got it out of
an old mattress. Unlikely, though, that it still has an effect...
You might not be aware of how a Newton display is built:
Touch sensitive foil
Glass pane
LCD Display
Backlight
Flexible display electronics board.
Quite obviously Andreas' picture shows that only the glass
pane below the touch sensitive foil is broken, not the
LCD display itself.
