Because quite a lot of operators do not allow you to disable your PIN - they
actually prevent it. In such cases (e.g. D2 in Germany), the only solution
is to send the +CPIN="PIN" to the device.

The Globe Trotter currently costs between 2 and 3 times as much as a good
condition NCP2 from eBay. Whilst I am sure that the Globe Trotter is a great
device, the NCP2 is currently much better value IMHO.
That said, I'm looking forward to hearing more about your Globe Trotter
support. Just one thing though - please build-in support for sending the SIM
card PIN for those of us who use a network which requires it!
