I've performed a similar operation on my own Newton, but wouldn't trust
myself to do it on anyone else's.

I used this as a guide before deciding to put my input jack where a SER-001
would go (the bulge of the case urked me). I found a part at radio shack
that would fit in the empty space, and could be screwed in, and could be
used as a bipass or a passthrough - when headphones were plugged in, the
speaker goes mute.

patch into the speaker wiring):
