The truth is that there are two thermistors (sensors), used to check
the temperature at two positions: one is contained in the battery pack to sense the battery temperature, the second is just behind the LCD to sense the LCD temperature.
While the first is used to indicate possible overheating of the battery
during charging, the latter is very handy to readjust the contrast of
the LCD depending on its temperature (AutoLCD is doing that).
If your Newt is long enough exposed to the environment, you can use the
LCD temperature readout as an indication for the ambient temperature, but
this is not very accurate.
But I can assure you that this is exactly the same for MP2000 and
MP2100.

ok.. i'm corrected..
the reasoning behind what i had said is that i have a 2100u, and a good friend has a 2100.. and his does NOT read the ambient temperature.. maybe his has a defective sensor.. but, i've seen other 2100s that do the same exact thing.. no ambient temp readings..
is anyone aware of any PCB design changes from the initial 2100s to the last 2100s to be made??
if not, maybe the few 2100s that i have seen have a defective sensor in them..
quick poll, does everyone who has an original 2100 have the ambient temp reading??
thanks.
jim.
