Matt,

It looks like you have a basic eMate without the memory upgrade. To expand
the amount of storage use a 5V PCMCIA linear flash card so you load more
software. An external modem connected to the serial port can then be used to
connect online. Most Hayes compatible modems will work fine.

My standard eMate's happily run NIE and Simplemail via an external modem - I
don't have NetHopper installed however. These machines also have a pile of
other packages on the card.

If you tap the overview (the dot between the scroll arrows) while the Extras
drawer is open you can see where your software resides and how much space it
occupies. If it says "built-in" next to the name the package is in ROM and
cannot be deleted but also takes no space away from you - so ignore it.

NOS 2.1 is standard issue on all eMates and is built into ROM.

The eMate has only one PCMCIA slot (the bottom one).

Connect to your desktop or laptop by a serial connection instead of Ethernet
- it's still pretty quick, even for backups. On the Mac you can use an
adaptor like the Farallon iPrint to bridge between the eMate and an
AppleTalk Ethernet network and this is a very convenient solution.

Joel.
