Just download the wireless driver from Hiroshi
<http://www.ff.iij4u.or.jp/~ngc/eng/newtwave.htm>, install it, and stick
your card in. Make sure you enable the "Use card for AppleTalk". Then, don't
do the setup there. Start with "Internet Setup". Create a new setup. Select
"Generic Setup". Select "Ethernet" from "Connect using". Tap "Continue".
Give your setup a name, like "AirPort DHCP". Select the appropriate
configuration. Unless you know that you want it manual, keep "DHCP Server"
that should already be showing next to "Configuration". Then, tap the "Card"
popup. Select the "D-Link DWL-650". Tap "Continue". In the next screen,
write your ISP domain name, if you know it. If you don't, that's OK. Tap
"Done".
Then, open "Owner Info" and create a worksite specifically for wireless.
Give it a name like "AirPort Home" or something similar. You don't have to
pick the closest city or fill in the area code and select a printer for now,
so just close the dialog. Back to the main "Owner Info" window, tap "Add"
and select "802.11b WaveLan setup". Enter your base station name in "SSID".
If you want to use WEP, you'll have to register the driver, so leave it
blank for now. You can tap "Advanced Setting" and then enable the checkbox
"Enable power management". Close the little "Advanced setting" dialog. If
you're using an AirPort Base Station or a wireless router, leave the "Mode"
to "Infrastructure". If you're going to use a computer with a wireless card
to act as a base station, I believe you have to select "ad-hoc". If you're
in Infrastructure, you don't need to select a channel, so you can pretty
much close the window.
Now, try your new settings. The easiest way to test if your setup is
properly done is using NetHopper and try to access a site that you know is
up and running, like www.apple.com. In NetHopper, after bringing the
connection dialog and typing the URL, after you tap "Go", you should be
presented with a connection dialog. That's where you should pick your new
worksite in the top left corner of the dialog. After picking up your
worksite, the specific internet setup you created should appear in the
middle, next to "Using" and the DWL-650 card should appear below, next to
"Card". Just tap "Connect" and see what happens.
Good luck!
-Laurent.
