Good point Laurent ! Even some 5-6 years ago people were really happy
to have
their Performas(!) and Powerbooks 5300 and good old PLW NTs LocalTalked
via PhoneNet connectors. Computers were seeing each other and both could
print to a PLW NT (or any other AppleTalk printer, for that matter).
That WAS
the network. Very slow, kind of unstable, but - functional.

OTOH, for what is worth - I never used termination resistors with
PhoneNet
connectors, and I used both Farallon PhoneNet Plus (older, plain box),
and Interex's FastNet (kind of fancy, with indication lights) kinds...
  I'm not even using them today. My PLW 320 works just fine, with two
PhoneNet
Plus devices ---> through AsanteTalk LocalTalk box and via 10/100
switch.
