I have one more data point to add. I am able to connect via AppleTalk
to my newton (2000u) with NCU in OS 10.2. I've never mucked around
with any settings in System 9 (or classic). I've been able to connect
with a crossover cable, through a switch and through a router.
The one thing that I seem to recall needing to do is installing the com
toolbox when I installed NCU (under system 9). Check in your System
9/Extensions folder for the file "AppleTalk ADSP Tool". If that exists
then you have the toolbox installed. If not, I would suggest doing so.
Maybe NCU is looking for an API supplied by the toolbox and is really
complaining about that.
Good luck.
