Bringing pin 26 low (or ground) will wake up the Newton. The interconnect
dongle is wired to connect pin 26 to one of the other ground signals on the port.

Sure, if you are a very fine solderer :) You can mount a headphone jack in
the space next to or directly below the interconnect port, and then just wire
from the speaker wires is easiest, also because the audio out from the
interconnect port is line-level (aka unamplified) and so you won't hear
anything with headphones connected to it. Check these out:
