Happy to report that a Xircom 56K Creditcard Modem does work in a MP2000.
Thanks Matthew and Joel for the help in connecting!

Newtscape ... Nethopper ... something else? What would you reckon to be the
best web browser on a MP2000 running NIE 2 for light mainly text based use.
