Sounds like you've been very lucky! I guess I would make two backups in
your case, to avoid the off chance that your backup shouldn't be 100%
o.k.
Remember that you should remove your flash card before the brain wipe,
wiping your card can be done from the Card application on your Newt.

Positive errors are hardware, thus not boding well for your card :-(
But I would still try the backup routine, I don't loose hope that
quickly ;-) (it could have been a bad connection to the card for
instance)

Restore will just get rid of fragmentation, but a severely mangled soup
will probably not backup at all, so you should know before that.
