D2 is a diode. It is like a one-way-valve for electrons. They typically put
them there so that the charger can charge the system and the system can not
try to charge the charger.

If you put on a charger with reversed polarity it will "reverse bias" the
diode and it will act like a resistor (or a hot plate in this case).

Any idea what the markings are on D2?

A voltage regulator will do that, not a diode.
