You haven't yet mentioned if you've checked the Mac System
Folder>Extensions Folder for the appletalk ADSP extension. NCU and
Newton communicate on a special sub-protocol of appletalk called ADSP.
This is installed by a full NCU installation.

On my MP2K, I have the choice of 3C589C or 3C589D. I have two cards and
one works with one choice and vice versa. So maybe experiment between
choices.
