Your workstation isn't (can't?) using the proxy for resolving IP addresses, is
it? Do this:
Click Start -> Run and type 'command' and click OK
At the command prompt, type 'ipconfig /all' and look for the list of "DNS
servers". What numbers does it say there?

No, it wouldn't. The proxy is only used for HTTP or FTP connections.
POP3/SMTP/IMAP connections may be open, or controlled in some other way.
