I think the approach was the right one just the price-performance formula
wasn't right and it may have been released a bit too soon (more dev't
required, too early in product life cycle). The version 2.x OS appears way
better than 1.x.
Apple might have been a little ambitious on their expected ROI. However
their financial circumstances at the time probably gave them no choice on
this.
I guess selling the technology to a third party when Apple ran into
difficulties might have cut short their own options when it eventually comes
to including HWR or PDAs back into their products.

i'm curious as to how norman's assessment sits with the list; does the
newton fail in its attempts to do "everything"? would a stripped-down,
task-specific appliance make more sense to "real" people? do the members of
newtontalk find these green bricks useful mainly because of the pleasures
associated with tinkering and resurrecting? hey, i'm just asking...
